I’m a middle-aged drummer based in Cambridgeshire (just outside St.Ives) and I’m looking to join a covers or tribute band, or form a new one, to be available for paid hire, events, functions, weddings etc.
My background and experience is a 4-month full-time Mon-Fri drumming course at the Musicians Academy in London, since closed down. I have also done the Trinity grades 5, 6, 7 and 8 exams and passed all with with distinction. For the record, I also have a degree in classical piano performance and I also did the eight piano exam grades with the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music, both practical and theory and I have a degree in classical piano performance as well as an A-level in music. But, don’t worry, I’m not a classical nut, my love is firmly routed in rock, pop, ska, funk etc.
As well as owning a top of the range Roland V-drum kit I also have an acoustic kit and a small home recording studio. I play the synth too – easy because of my concert pianist background.
I’m a solid drummer with good time-keeping and I am comfortable playing either with or without a click. I tend learn songs properly, down to every dotted semiquaver with carefully worked out sticking techniques and exactly as notated in the sheet music for any given song. I know a lot of covers band drummers (and bassists and guitarists) have a tendency to just get in the ballpark, which is fair enough as most audiences would never know. I just like to nail the drum part note-for-note as I believe it adds an extra ‘gene se qua’ that many other covers bands don’t have. Course, I don’t expect the bass or guitar to be quite as fastidious as myself – even the original artists would vary things slightly in live situations and never play it as per the released record.
